I am dying to see a gig at the Bluebird. What’s your favorite show you’ve seen in Nashville and where was it?

Mike–that is a mind-boggling question. I’ve been reflecting on it. As far as the Bluebird, I would say one of the best shows for me personally was Marshall Chapman, who has played there off and on for years, and I must admit for personal and sentimental reasons–also Will Reambeaux and the Delta Hurricanes (Kenny Greenberg was in his band at the time, and Will went on to be a great writer with a lot of cuts). But as far as all time best shows in Nashville–man, that is tough. I don’t know that I can limit it to one. The Pretenders at the Tennessee theatre with the original line-up (including Pete Farndon and James Honeyman-Scott), X at the Exit/In, The Black Crowes at the Ryman, definately Kris Kristofferson at the Ryman (that was pretty much a religious experience–I started crying when he did “Me and Bobby McGee”, and when he did “Sunday Morning Coming Down”–after leading into it with the backstory of Cash doing it on the Johnny Cash show, and being told to substitute “home” for “stoned”, but singing it the way it was written while looking up at Kris in the balcony–it was all over for me!), and some of the best musicianship ever–Los Lonely Boys at the Ryman. And the Talking Heads at Municipal. And REM at the Opry House (new one, not the Ryman). And, it must be said, Jason and the Nashville Scorchers (GO WARNER) playing at Cat’s on West End. And definately John Hiatt–every date I’ve ever seen him play–West End Methodist church charity gigs, 328 Performance Hall when Steve West still ruled Nashville, The Ryman, Riverfront Park..

Im going for Motley Crue at - where was that? I can’t remember either. I remember hotels, hookers and something about a happy star. Oh yeah, and gold lame. :D

How could I have possibly left that out–Motley Crue at the Municipal with White Snake opening!! Girls, Girls, Girls tour–we saw Guns ‘N Roses open for them in K-town–. I too remember the Hyatt, hookers, a fruitless Nikki Sixx search, the Huddle Hut & a happy star, carting cases of Bud through the lobby, fringed bustiers and I just ran across that gold lame skirt at mom’s three days ago (scary!), oh yeah–and sneaking out the back door so Big Daddy wouldn’t make me change out of the Crue Slut attire!! Good times, good times! The money’s all gone, but it sure was a hell of a party!

I’m going to add to my list–Alan Jackson at Starwood, Van Halen on the Women and Children First tour in 1980 at Municipal–even with the shitty acoustics–Eddie was mind-blowing! Dwight Yoakum at Starwood–the man is such an incredible talent, he never misses a note, and the band was so incredibly tight! The Clash at Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gym. Joe Jackson at TPAC’s Jackson Hall. Shooter Jennings at City Hall.
